The Trail of the Lonesome Pine is a 1908 romance novel set in the Appalachian Mountains at the turn of the 20th century. Sprinkled throughout the work are all the elements of a good romance. It has an elegant but realistic heroine, a hero who is an agent of progress and enlightenment, and a group of seemingly ignorant mountaineers to be pulled into the flow of orthodox American culture. In addition, it portrays the class struggles of the period incredibly.
