The Great House

When the book begins, we see a young woman sitting high on a window sill overlooking the Seine in Paris. Her bed is next to the window, but the room is a dormitory and her bed is screened from several others by only a thin curtain. We sense a feeling of loneliness and unhappiness, especially when we learn that today is her twentieth birthday.
